After Nights Without Sleep began in earnest in the same way that the last album was completed. The band convened at London Bridge Studios with a batch of songs to record. Some had been in the live set, others were completely new at the time of recording. The newer tracks had hardly been rehearsed when recorded. Wanting to move past the “live” sound of the last LP, after the basic tracks were recorded live in-studio as before, but the bandmates started recording in their home studios and trading files over the internet to finish the album. This allowed Matt and Peter in particular to experiment with arrangements, vocals, and textures in a way that was not possible on the last record. Intrumental duties were passed around, and the attitude was “if it sounds good, keep it.” As a result of this process, each song was built up layer by layer on top of the basic studio tracks.
